Bio-Based Ethyl Acetate Solvent Overview

Aug 31, 2022

New Paragraph

As an innovative manufacturer of sustainable, safe, bio-based green solvents and solvent blends, Vertec BioSolvents is pleased to announce that we have relaunched our Ethyl Acetate solvent as VertecBio™ Bio-Based Ethyl Acetate. Our latest ethyl acetate solvent, ethyl ethanoate, is a bio-friendly cleaning agent that is revolutionizing the solvent market. Formulated completely from renewable resources, there are no environmentally-hazardous ingredients, no ozone-depleting chemicals (ODCs), and no hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) - better for people and better for our environment.

What is Ethyl Acetate?

According to the ACS (American Chemical Society), ethyl acetate is a simple carboxylate ester which was first synthesized from ethanol and acetic acid. It is a colorless liquid that has a sweet, fruity odor which most people find to be pleasant. Ethyl acetate is widely used as a coating solvent, extraction agent, carrier solvent, and process aid. VertecBio Ethyl Acetate Bio-Based is synthesized from sustainable, corn-based USP-grade ethyl alcohol.

How is Ethyl Acetate Used?

This is a highly-versatile compound. In fact, EMR (Expert Market Research) reports that ethyl acetate solvent is one of the most widely used industrial solvents worldwide. Because of its flexibility and multiple applications, EMR estimates that the global market demand for this product will reach five million metric tons by the year 2025.

With a relatively low cost and low toxicity levels, ethyl acetate has applications in many industries. In most cases, the ethyl acetate solvent is used for printing inks, adhesives, herbicides, and paints. Some manufacturers, however, even use it in food products. A few of the many applications for ethyl acetate include:

  • Glues and adhesive agents
  • Industrial coatings
  • Protective coatings
  • Fragrances and perfumes
  • Oil-based lacquers
  • Decaffeination for coffee and tea products
  • Cleaning formulations
  • Petroleum products
  • Food flavoring and fruit essences
  • Medications
  • Cigarettes

Why Transition to a Bio-Based Ethyl Acetate

Although the product itself is not considered to be extremely dangerous to the environment, the problem lies mostly in the use of petroleum-based agents in its production. In its final form, ethyl acetate also comes with some hazard warnings. In the high quantities typically encountered in a production environment, it can be highly flammable, may cause eye irritation, and can also irritate the skin, nose, and throat. Exposure to high levels for a prolonged period of time can sometimes lead to feelings of dizziness and lightheadedness.

That is why Vertec BioSolvents made the decision to transition to a high-performance, 100% bio-derived ethyl acetate solvent. Designed to replace all applications of  non-sustainable, petroleum-based ethyl acetate, our VertecBio™ Bio-Based Ethyl Acetate is produced instead from natural, sustainable raw materials. With the increasing world-wide focus on reducing consumption of petroleum materials and improving the environment, this transition could not have come at a better time.

We wanted to protect both workers and the environment, while still providing an ethyl acetate solvent that is equal in performance. Our VertecBio™ Ethyl Acetate is a readily biodegradable, high-performance, highly-versatile, bio-based solvent that is great for formulating and cleanup, while leaving no residue. This product includes:

Transitioning to a Sustainable Ethyl Acetate

With this latest addition to the Vertec BioSolvents product line, the terms "environmentally friendly" and "high performance" are no longer mutually exclusive. Our Vertec BioSolvents products are primarily derived from corn, soybeans, citrus fruits and other renewable feedstocks and complimentary additives. They are both environmentally friendly AND high performing. Our products are based primarily on four ingredients: ethyl lactate, fatty acid methyl esters (soy methyl esters), d-limonene, and ethanol – all safe and renewable resources.

Manufacturers and producers that decide to make the transition to this ethyl acetate solvent will find that it is a highly-versatile bio-based solvent for formulating.

Common applications for our bio-solvents include:

  • Agriculture
  • Inks
  • Paints and coatings
  • Petroleum
  • Industrial manufacturing

Proudly made in the United States of America, ethyl acetate bio-based solvents from Vertec BioSolvents are continuously being tested for new applications. We provide an alternative solution for applications wherever petroleum-based solvents are used. Users are able to protect the worker's environment and improve their sustainability position with bio-based solvents.

Ethyl Acetate FAQs

  • Is Ethyl Acetate Polar or Non-Polar?

Ethyl acetate is a polar compound, because the C=O and C-O bonds are polar and the bond dipole moments don't cancel each other out. That said, it is, to a large extent, incapable of hydrogen bonding (it interacts via permanent dipole-permanent dipole interaction) so it's solubility in very polar solvent like water is low.

  • What is Ethyl Acetate Formula?

    Formula: CH3COOC2H5

  • Is Ethyl Acetate Miscible in Water?

Ethyl Acetate is slightly miscible in water.

  • How Can Ethyl Acetate be Used?

Ethyl acetate is used primarily as:

    1. A coating solvent for paints, lacquers, and varnishes.
    2. An extraction solvent for various processes, including decaffeination of coffee and tea.
    3. A process solvent in the pharmaceutical industry.
    4. A carrier solvent for printing inks, adhesives, and nail polish.
  • What is Another Name for Ethyl Acetate?

Ethyl Acetate is also known as Ethyl Ethanoate.
