VERTEC BIOSOLVENTS WINS PHASE 2 SBIR GRANT FROM THE DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY

The project entitled: Biosolvents for Coatings, Resins and Biobased Materials, won a major two year grant from the DOE.

The primary focus of this work is the replacement of petroleum based solvents with renewable resource based biosolvents for widespread applications in the coatings industry.

Vertec BioSolvents has developed and commercialized new proprietary blends of biosolvents that provide superior price performance for several specialty coatings applications. The recently introduced ELSOL blend overcomes the odor related issues of lactate esters.

The objective of this project is to expand the use of biobased solvents for large volume applications in the coatings industry.

Vertec BioSolvents has partnered with Akzo Nobel, Hexion Specialty Chemicals and other technology leaders whose management understands the value of “Green”, sustainable, renewable, carbon-neutral products and technologies. LEARN MORE

Low odor biosolvent blends available for wide range of applications

Vertec BioSolvents, Inc. has achieved a major breakthrough in lactate ester technology.  Despite their excellent, powerful solubility characteristics, very desirable physical properties, non-persistent (readily biodegradable) nature and renewable resource, carbon neutral origins, lactate esters have not, until now, been broadly accepted by industry and consumers due to their strong characteristic odor.  Even in blended solvents and formulated products that have high concentrations of lactate esters, the odor perception and tolerance have been difficult to overcome.  Now, however, Vertec BioSolvents has discovered that blending lactate esters with certain specific alcohols overcomes the odor and tolerance problems associated with the lactate esters. This discovery is enabling more widespread use of the solvent blends in formulated products and as general wipe and cleaning solvents. This technical breakthrough has greatly expanded the potential for further applications and growth of biobased solvents as replacements for petrochemical solvents.

These patented solvent blends are now available under VertecBio ELSOL.

 Plastics recycling

The ultimate sustainable technology story: A forward-looking, US company is now utilizing Vertec Bio’s biobased solvents to recycle PET plastic bottles.  The customer has developed an efficient, closed-loop recycling process that conserves natural resources in two ways: 1) Reuse of post-consumer plastic, derived from petroleum; 2) Substitution of petroleum cleaning solvents with renewable resource, green solvents.
